Cousin of H.E. Emir, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Ruler of the State of Qatar. Sheikh Sultan's father was the late Sheikh Suhaim Hamad Al Thani, Uncle to the current Emir.

Sheikh Suhaim was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs for the State of Qatar from 1972 until his death on the 21st August 1985. He had a great deal of participation, particularly in Political, Humanitarian, Social and also Cultural activities. His greatest worries were "Qatar Homeland and compatriot" which played a big role in sending Qatari and Arab youth from different countries to study abroad at his own expenses. He was known for his generosity and munificence, and had supported charities morally and financially.
